THREE RIVERS (June 29, 2013)--Authorities continued to search Saturday for an inmate who escaped from a medium security federal prison in South Texas.
Jose Guadalupe Aguilar, Jr., 28, walked away from the prison Friday morning near the town of Three Rivers.
Maria Arviza, a prison spokeswoman, said Aguilar ran off into the brush after an employee spotted him as he walked away.
The prison is a medium security facility with an adjacent satellite prison camp that houses minimum security male offenders such as Aguilar.
Aguilar, a old Brownsville native, began serving a 9-month sentence for a supervised release violation in April.
His projected release date was Oct. 23.
Arviza says Aguilar's original charge was making a false statement in connection with firearms records.
Aguilar does not have a history of violence, authorities said.
