McALLEN (July 25, 2013)—Ramon De La Garza of Mission, a former employee of a now-defunct South Texas medical equipment company, has been sentenced to more than 11 years in prison for fraud and identity theft.
A federal judge in McAllen sentenced De La Garza in the $11 million billing scheme involving power wheelchairs, scooters and other supplies.
RGV DME owner Marcello Herrera, his wife Carla Cantu Herrera and De La Garza in February pleaded guilty to conspiring to defraud Medicare and Texas Medicaid.
Marcelo Herrera and De La Garza also pleaded guilty to aggravated ID theft over reimbursements since 2004.
Marcelo Herrera was sentenced this month to 12 years in prison ordered to repay $6.1 million.
His wife awaits formal sentencing.
She and De La Garza, who was sentenced Wednesday, must each pay $5 million in restitution.
