HOUSTON (January 17, 2014) An off-duty Houston officer shot and killed a man suspected in a string of robberies while working in uniform on a security job Thursday night, police say.
Authorities say the suspect was riding a bicycle and looking into several businesses at a strip mall when the officer approached and asked him for identification.
Police say the suspect began to walk away.
The officer drew his gun and ordered the man to stop, the two struggled and the suspect ran, police said.
The officer caught up with the suspect, who then put his hands in the waistband of his pants and charged the officer, who fired once, police spokesman Kese Smith said.
The suspect died at the scene.
The officer, whose name wasn't immediately released, was put on administrative leave while the shooting is investigated.
