QUINLAN (December 3, 2012)—Off-duty Dallas County sheriff's Sgt. Kenneth Riggins, 52, of Quinlan, died at a hospital after a traffic accident that left the 15-year-old girl who was driving the truck in which he was riding with minor injuries.
Riggins died of injuries he received when the pickup truck the girl was driving left the road and hit a tree Monday night near Quinlan, about 40 miles northeast of Dallas.
He was pronounced dead at a Greenville hospital.
Riggins, who most recently served in the sheriff's office of strategic planning, had been with the department for 20 years.
It wasn’t immediately clear how Riggins and the teenager who was driving were related.
Conflicting Dallas media reports identified the girl both as his daughter and his niece and one report said he was giving her a driving lesson at the time of the accident.
Department of Public Safety Sgt. Sgt. Lonny Haschel said the girl was taken to the hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries, but no other details were released.
