Perry Names New Secretary Of State, Chief Of Staff

AUSTIN (November 27, 2012)—Gov. Rick Perry Tuesday named former Texas Public Safety Commission member John Steen to replace Secretary of State Hope Andrade, who announced last week she’s stepping down after four years on the job.

Steen is past chairman of the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission and once served on the Texas Commission on Economy and Efficiency in State Government.

“John’s strong business background and dedication to public service throughout the years make him uniquely qualified to serve in this important role,” Perry said.

“His leadership over our state’s elections process, economic development efforts and international relations will be an integral part of Texas’ goal to expand economic prosperity and opportunity for all Texans.”

Steen, who will also serve as Perry's liaison on border and Mexican affairs, and become chief protocol officer on international issues, has contributed about $56,000 to Perry's gubernatorial campaigns.

He also has given to Attorney General Greg Abbott, Comptroller Susan Combs and Texas House Speaker Joe Straus.

Perry Tuesday also named Ann S. Bishop as his chief of staff effective December 3, 2012.

Bishop replaces Jeff Boyd, whom Perry appointed to the Texas Supreme Court.

Bishop has been executive director of the Employees Retirement System of Texas since 2004.

She has also operated an independent consulting business, served as deputy comptroller of public accounts and as the first executive director of the Department of Information resources.

“Ann brings extensive leadership experience and a history of success in both state government and the private sector. Her skills will be invaluable as she manages the broad range of issues in the Governor’s Office, including budget, policy and economic development,”. Perry said.

“I have known Ann for years and place great trust in her abilities and her character.”
