HEMPHILL (February 21, 2013)--A savage thunderstorm high wind, and possibly a tornado, struck a rural area Thursday in far East Texas, leaving one woman dead.
Sabine County Sheriff Tom Maddox said the storm streaked across the southwestern corner of the county on the Louisiana border at around 1:30 p.m. Thursday.
Maddox said the storm felled a tree limb, which crashed onto a mobile home about 5 miles north of Pineland, killing Louise Pillow Stringer, 74.
Maddox said the storm wind appeared to have been a tornado, rather than straight-line winds, but Senior Meteorologist Jason Hansford of the National Weather Service in Shreveport, La., said there’s not yet conclusive evidence of a tornado.
A survey team will investigate Friday.
Maddox said 25 homes were damaged by the storm.
