SAN ANTONIO (December 16, 2012)--One of the most prominent families in Texas politics is saying goodbye to Congress after more than half a century as U.S. Rep. Charlie Gonzalez serves his final days in Washington.
The Democrat has represented his San Antonio district for 14 years, following in the footsteps of his famous father, Henry B. Gonzalez, who held the job for nearly four decades.
Charlie Gonzalez is preparing for an "encore career" outside politics after deciding to not seek an eighth term.
He was chairman of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus and the House Banking Committee.
Replacing Gonzalez is former state lawmaker Joaquin Castro, whose family has its own pedigree.
Castro's twin brother is San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro, a rising Democratic star on the national stage.
