HUNTSVILLE (October 31, 2012)—Donnie Lee Roberts, 41, was executed just after 6 p.m. Wednesday in Huntsville for the 2003 murder of his live-in girlfriend who prosecutors said was killed because she refused to give him money to support his crack cocaine habit.

Roberts was convicted of capital murder in the Oct. 15, 2003 shooting death of Vicki Bowen, 44, whose body was found by a coworker the next day in her home at Lake Livingston.

Bowen, who worked as a dental assistant, had been shot twice in the head.

Her television and her son’s truck were missing and authorities arrested Roberts at a drug house in Livingston after spotting the truck parked outside.

Investigators later determined that Roberts had also taken jewelry, a money order, a .22 rifle, a .22 pistol and tickets for a Houston Texans-Tennessee Titans game, which he had sold for $100.

During questioning, Roberts admitted he had a “crack cocaine problem” and told investigators, “I pointed the gun at her and I told her just give me some money.”

Later during the interview he said, “I pointed the gun at her and I said, ‘if you’d just give me some money.’ And she said ‘No.’ And then I said, ‘Look, it doesn’t have to be this way.’ That’s all I remember saying to her. And the next thing I know, I shot her.”

During his trial, however, he testified that he picked up the .22 rifle because it was out of place.

He said he saw what looked like a .22 pistol in Bowen’s pocket and said that when she moved her hand to the pocket that he must have chambered a round in the rifle.

He testified that he did not remember firing the gun.

He claimed he didn’t intend to rob Bowen, but admitted to taking some of her belongings later.

The U.S. Supreme Court refused earlier this week to review Roberts' case.

It was the 12th execution of the year in Texas.
