(July 29, 2008)--The 2009 Miami-Dade, Fla. police handbook will include information for officers who respond to calls involving ritual animal sacrifices.

The handbook will remind county officers that federal and state laws protect the freedom to practice religion.

The handbook change comes a year after Coral Gables police raided a home where Santeria practitioners were slaughtering goats, chickens and pigeons.

Worshippers were held at gunpoint and detained for hours.

Those who practice Santeria, a blend of traditional African religions and Catholicism, welcome the change.

Followers believe in spiritual forces that require blood sacrifices.
