(August 25, 2008)—David Hayes was just holding his granddaughter’s new pink Barbie rod and reel while she went to the bathroom.
He didn’t expect to catch anything with it.
But he did.
In fact he landed the biggest channel catfish on record in North Carolina.
The fish weighed 21 pounds and one ounce and at 32 inches, was two inches longer than the rod.
His granddaughter got the pink Barbie fishing rod for Christmas, and she had caught a few bluegill with it before her grandfather hauled in the catfish.
The Winston-Salem Journal reported the catch has been certified as a record by the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission.
Hayes and his granddaughter have been fishing in the pond behind his house since she was big enough to hold a pole.
