(November 6, 2008)—Barney, the lame duck first dog that’s frequently in the president’s arms when Mr. Bush flies to Waco to spend time at his ranch near Crawford, has taken a bite out of a White House reporter who reached down to pet him.

Barney evidently wasn’t in mood for attention from the press corps at took it out on Jon Dekker of Reuters.

“He totally got me,” Dekker said after Barney snapped.

The episode was captured on video by another reporter and has wound up on YouTube.

It ends up with a freeze frame of the Scottish terrier's fangs.

First lady Laura Bush says it may have been Barney's way of saying "he was done with the paparazzi."

The reporter was promptly bandaged by a White House doctor and says he may be on antibiotics for a few days.

To Anonymous, I've had nothing but Pit Bulls for 31 years. Every dog I've had loved people, just don't bring your dog to visit.

I've watched the tape, and this reporter approached Barney in a way that is absolutely wrong! Any dog. No one (particularly a stranger)should walk up and reach for a dog. As anonymous said, there is a right & wrong way to approach a dog. If you don't know the difference, don't mess with one.
