(November 11, 2008)—Tennessee college student Elizabeth Pittenger could owe her life to her purse.

The Middle Tennessee State University student carries an oversized handbag and she had it with her when she was robbed at gunpoint while walking at night to her car on campus.

She fought off the would-be robber, but not before the mugger fired his gun.

Police later found the .38 caliber slug inside of Pittenger's purse where it had been stopped by some of the stuff in the handbag, including a calculator and an umbrella.

Police say the coed wasn't hurt.

Officers arrested the suspected gunman a short time later.
