(December 16, 2008)--Blame it on procrastination, the mounting job losses or the slumping economy, but with nine days to go until Christmas, many have not yet wrapped up their holiday shopping.

A National Retail Federation survey found that shoppers have completed less of their holiday shopping this year than at the same time last year and that 41 million Americans have yet to even start,

Kirk Willard, a last minute shopper said he needs a deadline.

“It takes a severe shortage of time before Christmas Eve for me to get out."

The shopping window opened late this year.

This years shopping season, which lasts from Black Friday until the day before Christmas, is five days shorter than it was last year.

But others may be waiting in hopes of getting the best last-minute buys.

"I want to be organized about it and have the right coupons to get the right sales," said Jessica Whittier, another procrastinating holiday shopper.

The survey also found that the biggest procrastinators are men and people 35 to 44 years old.

Among other trends reported in the survey, is that some people are shying away from buying gift cards.

About 24 percent of shoppers said they have purchased gift cards so far this year, down from the 30 percent of shoppers who said they done so by this time last year, the survey said.
