Lawyer Gets 5-Cent IRS Bill, 4-Cent Refund
The IRS is evidently watching its pennies. It billed a lawyer for 5 cents and then later advised him he’s due a 4-cent refund.

(January 3, 2009)--Detroit defense attorney James Howarth received a letter from the Internal Revenue Service in November saying the government was due 5 cents.
The Detroit Free Press reported Saturday that that Howarth was notified to pay "to avoid additional penalty and/or interest."
Howarth said a second letter told him he's due four cents, but he would have to request the refund because it’s less than $1.
Howarth aid he's not sure whether there is connection between the nickel bill and the 4-cent refund.
He's also not sure if he now owes the government a penny or if he's benefiting from a 9-cent swing.
IRS spokesman Luis D. Garcia says the agency doesn't comment on individual accounts.
