OKLAHOMA CITY (March 3, 2009)--Oklahoma may be best known for some of the legendary country performers it has produced, but the state now has an official rock song by a band that many residents may never have heard of.
More than 21,000 people voted on a list of 10 songs, including Presley's "Heartbreak Hotel," which was written by a former Oklahoma schoolteacher.
The Flaming Lips' "Do You Realize??" won with more than 50 percent of the vote.
Others nominated included "After Midnight," by Oklahoman J.J. Cale, which was re-released by Eric Clapton, and "Never Been to Spain," written by Hoyt Axon and recorded by Three Dog Night.
Flaming Lips lead singer Wayne Coyne says he never gave winning the competition much thought, and said it was an honor to have their 2002 song in the Top 10.
The Oklahoma Historical Society conducted the competition. People in the state nominated 454 songs written or performed by Oklahomans.
