PAGE, Ariz. (March 8, 2009)--Four rare California condors hatched and raised in captivity have been released along the Arizona-Utah border.
The release is part of an effort by the private nonprofit Peregrine Fund to re-establish condor populations in their historic habitat.
About 200 spectators gathered at Vermillion Cliffs National Monument on Saturday to watch the release.
Eddie Feltes, the project manager, said there are about 160 condors in the wild, including some who frequent Vermillion Cliffs, Zion National Park and the Grand Canyon.
Before being set free, each condor was fitted with a transmitter so biologists can track it.
