PHOENIX (June 5, 2009)--A Phoenix church leader has received a suspended 10-day jail sentence because his tolling church bells violated a city noise ordinance.
The Alliance Defense Fund says Bishop Richard Painter may appeal the sentence.
The bells at the Cathedral of Christ the King normally chime at the top of every hour from eight in the morning until eight at night.
Neighbors say the bells are too loud and ring too often.
In addition to Painter's sentence, the judge restricted chimes at the church to no more than 60 decibels for two minutes on Sundays and specific religious holidays.

I saw a segment on the TV news with these guys. Their bells are between 60 and 70 decibels. They got charged and sentenced yet the ice cream truck that goes through their neighborhood was checked at 75 decibels and has had not a bit of a problem. These neighbors sould get a life or come to an agreement with the church to only ring the bells several times a day or something. To have them charged for this is the crime and they should be ashamed of themselves.

I HAVE to agree here! The police will not stop the extremely loud and filthy music from peoples cars, but a church is fair game...

oh yes, how terrible we have to listen to church bells, get a grip, the police cant do anything about these boom, boom cars, that are way louder then that, but lets pick on a church. to those people that complain, i sure wouldnt want to be you standing in front of our maker, while that part of your life flashes in front of you. maybe hearing those bells , is telling you get back to church.
