DALLAS (October 28, 2009)—The owner of a Dallas strip club who was snubbed by a conservative group led by former U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich has decided to create a shelter for pit bulls in Gingrich’s honor.

Dawn Rizos was set to receive an "Entrepreneur of the Year" award on Oct. 7 from the group American Solutions for Winning the Future, which Gingrich heads, but group reneged, saying it had mistaken her business for another.

Rizos, who owns the topless club The Lodge, was refunded the $5,000 fee she was required to pay to receive the award and she donated the money to Animal Guardians of America's sanctuary for rescued dogs in Celina, about 35 miles north of Dallas.

"Newt's Nook - A Home for Pit Bulls" is under construction.

Rizos says Gingrich will be invited to the formal dedication in early November.

i think it is great when anyone, no matter what he/she does for a living does something good for this wonderful breed. more time than not these dogs are put to sleep or shot just because of the way that they look. it's nice to here about someone doing something for these dogs. when will it be open, i already have3 pits and am always looking for another good dog.
