OAKLAND, Calif. (November 7, 2009)--A man stole a car to drive to the courthouse for a court appearance on a previous auto theft charge, the California Highway Patrol said.

CHIP investigator Chris Linehan said he arrested the man after finding him sitting in a stolen 2000 Range Rover outside the Vallejo courthouse, where the 24-year-old man had just appeared for arraignment on auto theft charges stemming from an arrest on Oct. 31.

Linehan traced the stolen Range Rover through the vehicle’s LoJack system.

The man told officers his car was impounded and he had no way to get to the hearing.

He was jailed on suspicion of auto theft and possession of stolen property.
