LONDON (November 22, 2009)--An auction house says it is selling a rare first edition of Charles Darwin's "On the Origin of Species" that was found in a family's guest bathroom in southern England.

Christie's auction house said Sunday the book, which is one of about 1,250 copies first printed in 1859, was found on a toilet bookshelf at a family's home in Oxford.

The book will be auctioned Tuesday, which is the 150th anniversary of the publication of the famous work.

Christie's said the book is likely to sell for about $99,000.

Darwin's "The Origin of Species" outlined his theory of natural selection, the foundation for the modern understanding of evolution.

Celebrations around the world this year marked the 200th anniversary of Darwin's birth.

It is close minded people like Susie and Cass that make me believe all religions are nothing more than cults of brainwashed members. You can believe all the fantasies of the bible but you won't believe in science that can be proven? Who is really the misguided one here?

Susie and Cass, Are you two really stupid enough to believe the whold Adam and Eve thing word for word? That it is not just a simplified story of evolution? Or you really believe out popped two people? If this is what you believe and we are all ancestors of Adam and Eve please explain how their son went to get a wife from the land of Nod. Where did these people come from? Oops got ya there didn't I? Come on people its a nice bible story but thats it. Science FACT has proved Darwin right.

Susie, if you actually took the time to understand the book, you wouldn't be so judgemental. Despite a few minor flaws in the book, Darwin's overall mechanism of evolution via natural selection has been supported by multitudes of evidence over the past 150 years. It, contrary to what a lot of clergy will tell you, is NOT incompatible with the Bible, nor does it contradict it. Evolution and religion can peacefully coexist. Darwin is a person to be admired, respected, and celebrated, not spat upon by close minded religious zealots. And I say this as a Christian myself.
