BELTON (February 15, 2013)--A state championship was held Friday for students across Texas involved in the Texas – National Archery in the Schools Program, a program that offers the sport of archery as in-school curriculum.

About 1,200 students in grades 4-12 descended on the Bell County Expo Center to show off their skills with a bow and arrow.

The Texas – National Archery in the Schools Program was designed to improve classroom performance and reduce dropout rates by making the sport available to students as part of their physical education course.

Schools that teach archery as part of the in-school curriculum are qualified to compete in the tournament, however, schools that offer the sport as an extra-curricular activity are not allowed to participate.

Teams of 16-24 male and female students competed for scholarships and trophies.

$10,000 was awarded in scholarships last year.
