BELTON (October 19, 2012)--A Converse man pleaded guilty Friday in Belton to an intoxication manslaughter charge in a July 2011 traffic crash on Interstate 35 that left a Delaware man dead.
Philip Ray Hernandez was sentenced to 10 years in prison after entering the plea in 426 District Court in the July 1, 2011 death of Chad Richard Litchford, 31, of Wilmington, Del., who was standing at the passenger side of his disabled truck at the time of the crash.
In an affidavit issued for Hernandez's arrest, officers noted they saw Litchford's truck parked on the Interstate sometime before the accident and learned that the truck had broken down.
Litchford told the officers he was waiting for assistance and the officers left the area.
Just a few minutes later the officers were sent to a report of a crash at the same location and when they arrived they found the pickup truck in the grassy median and Litchford lying lifeless on the ground.
Officers also located Hernandez at the scene and determined he was under the influence of alcohol.
Hernandez also was injured in the crash.
Investigators later were able to determine the impact of the crash pushed the pickup truck over Litchford and he died as a result of injuries he sustained from being run over.
