BELTON (December 10, 2012)--Belton City Council member Clifton Peters is resigning from the city council after serving nearly 12 years on the board.

He is also resigning from the Tax Increment Reinvestment Zone Board after nearly 7 years on the job citing health reasons.

Peters, 59, was recently diagnosed with Amytrophic lateral sclerosis, commonly referred to as ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease.

Since Peters’ time as a councilmember and mayor pro tem, the city has experienced a 28 percent population growth in addition to the Nolan Creek Hike/Bike Trail, two splash pads, Harris Community Center, a second fire station, renovated city hall, special needs baseball field, Sparta Road extension and numerous other improvements, a city spokesperson said.

While he has resigned from the council, he will chair the Capital Improvement Planning Committee.

“Our prayers are with Clifton and his family as he deals with these health challenges. Belton is truly a better place for his service,” Belton City Manager Sam Listi said.
