BELTON (March 15, 2013)--The Belton Police Department is offering a free service to seniors in the form of a welfare check.

It works like this: a police officer or representative will call the designated person at a scheduled day and time to check on them. If they do not get an answer an officer will stop by to check on them.

Unanswered calls and busy signals will be called back.

Seniors who live alone and live in Belton are encouraged to participate.

The R-U-OK program allows seniors the option to cancel at anytime and residents can alert the dispatcher if they plan on being out of town or do not want a call.

Applications for the program can be picked up at the Belton Police Department office.

For more information, call police at (254) 933-5840.

The program will kick off April 3.
