BELTON (April 1, 2013)--A Killeen man charged with murder in connection with the deaths of two people in a car crash in April 2012 was scheduled to go on trial Monday in state district court in Belton.

Jury selection was set to begin at 10 a.m. in 426th State District Court in the trial of John Stanton Beasley, 24, who according to an indictment, was fleeing from police on April 14 when the crash happened.

The pursuing officers said Stanton ran a red light and several stop signs before he lost control of his Chevrolet Tahoe as he tried to turn from College Street onto Church Avenue.

Stanton and a front seat passenger survived the crash, but James Carl Broland, 33, and Tamojeane Kehaulani Tambakis, 39, both of whom were in the back seat, died at the scene.

The Tahoe flew into the air and was nearly sliced in half by a utility pole, after which it rolled several times and came to rest on its roof.

Police said Stanton tried to escape on foot after the crash but soon was apprehended.
