Peters has served on the council since February 2000 and was mayor pro tem from 2003 to 2005.

During his nearly 12 years on the council Belton’s population has grown 28 percent and the city has invested in commercial development, parks and municipal projects.

“In a time of rapid growth, with constant pressures on our infrastructure systems, Mr. Peters has remained steadfast in preparing Belton for the future,” Belton City Manager Sam Listi said in a press release Friday.

“Our prayers are with Clifton and his family as he deals with these health challenges. Belton is truly a better place for his service,” he said.

He has also resigned from the Tax Increment Reinvestment Zone Board, on which he had served since March 2006.

Peters’ term expires in May 2013 and the council is expected to name a replacement.

He has accepted an invitation to chair the city’s Capital Improvement Planning Committee in order to continue to serve the community.
