LAKE BELTON (June 19, 2012)—A 62-year-old Central Texas man who was taking his 11-year-old grandson fishing Tuesday at Lake Belton died after suffering what evidently was a heart attack while trying to retrieve a drifting boat.
Authorities identified the man as Richard Leland of McGregor.
Leland and his grandson Daniel were putting the boat in at a ramp at White Flint Park just off State Highway 36 when a gust of wind caught the boat and it began to drift away, authorities said.
Leland collapsed after he went into the water to pull the boat back to the ramp.
His grandson swam out and was able to pull his grandfather to shore where passersby performed CPR, authorities said.
Paramedics, however, were unable to revive him.
A justice of the peace arrived at the ramp just after 12:30 p.m. to pronounce the man dead.
An official said the boy did “a great job and did everything he could.”
