CAMERON (February 8, 2013)—Kirsten Salerno, 28, a nurse from College Station, who was killed Thursday morning in a two-vehicle crash on a rural highway near Cameron, was the wife of Texas A&M Consolidated High School soccer coach Stefano Salerno, whose team and friends are rallying to raise money to help the couple’s families travel here for her funeral.

Salerno and his wife are both originally from Malta.

The accident happened at around 7:15 a.m. Thursday.

DPS troopers say Kirsten Salerno was driving a 2007 Toyota sedan west on FM 485 near Milam County Road 132 when an eastbound Toyota crossed the center line and struck her car on the driver's side.

Dr. Allan Nickel, 63, of Temple, suffered facial injuries in the crash and was taken to Scott & White Hospital.

Quinn Williams, whose son plays on Stefano Salerno’s team, is working with other parents to organize a fundraiser to bring members of the couple’s family from Malta to College Station for the funeral.

"If you don't know coach Salerno…he is an outstanding individual," Williams said.

Organizers are accepting cash, food donations, and even frequent flyer miles.

"We're doing all we can to raise as much cash as we can for the families of both Coach Salerno's wife and his family to come here to mourn the death of his wife," Williams said.

Friday night Williams' son put Kirsten's name on his soccer cleats for the team’s game in Conroe.

"The boys are really behind him on this," Williams said.

So far more than $7,000 has been raised, money that will help unite families half a world away.

Two local club soccer teams will also launch a fundraiser Monday selling wristbands in Kirsten Salerno's memory for $5 each.
