Local Student Caught With Gun Had Glock, 11 Rounds Of Ammunition

COPPERAS COVE (November 28, 2012)—School officials found a Glock .40 caliber handgun and a magazine containing 11 rounds of ammunition in the locker of an eighth grade boy who remains in the Bell County Juvenile Detention Center, Copperas Cove police said Wednesday.

The gun was not loaded, police said.

Copperas Cove police arrested the 13-year-old student Tuesday morning at S.C. Lee Junior High School at 1205 Courtney Lane after the gun was found in a backpack inside the boy’s locker, the Copperas Cove ISD said in a press release.

Information from other students led to the search of the boy’s locker, the district said.

The gun was secured, the student was isolated and police were called, the district said.

No one was hurt.

Police responded to the school just after 10:20 a.m. Tuesday and took the boy into custody just before 11 a.m., Copperas Cove police spokesman Sgt. Kevin Keller said.

Under the Texas Education Code, the student could be expelled for a year, the district said.

“Our campus recommendation is to impose the most severe consequence allowed,” S.C. Lee Principal, Kayleen Love said.

School officials told students about the incident during an enrichment period and letters were sent home to parents.

Copperas Cove Superintendent Dr. Joe Burns praised school officials for the way they handled the incident.

“It is unfortunate that incidents such as this take place in school settings and serves as a reminder to parents to keep firearms secured at all times,” Burns said.
