FORT HOOD (January 7, 2013)--Fort Hood officials will demolish an obsolete military radio tower later this month in Topsey.

The approximately 70-year-old tower stands 100 feet on the T.W. Whatley Jr. estate.

Engineers from the 36th Engineer Brigade will use explosives to demolish the structure that has been requested to be removed by the estate administrator.

Approximately five pounds of explosives will be used and materials from the tower will be recycled through Fort Hood recycling facilities.

Coryell County law enforcement and ONCOR Power Company will oversee the project and say there is no danger to the public or nearby property.

Crews were expected to demolish the tower Wednesday, but have since postponed the event until January 16, due to lightning threats Wednesday.

Topsey is west of Fort Hood, about 17 miles north of Kempner.
