(November 12, 2012)--Numerous entities will host veterans’ job fairs statewide on Thursday.

The Texas Workforce Commission (TWC), Texas Veterans Commission and 28 local workforce development boards will present the “Hiring Red, White & You!” campaign.

The initiative is a joint effort of Texas Governor Rick Perry, Texas Medical Center Surgeon Dr. James Henry “Red” Duke, Jr., the Texas Veterans Commission, and the Texas Workforce Commission to address the employment needs of Texas veterans returning to the workforce.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, unemployment among veterans who have served in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars is higher than the national average.

“The statewide job fair will provide opportunities for employment to the estimated 92,000 veterans in the Texas Workforce,” A Texas Workforce Commission spokesperson said.

That statistic comes from Current Population Survey 2011 and is annually adjusted.

TWC certifies employer claims for the federal Work Opportunity Tax Credit, which allows employers to receive up to $9,600 on federal business income or payroll tax benefits when they hire from a certain qualified groups of veterans.

Fort Hood, Waco and Round Rock will all hold job fairs Thursday.

At Fort Hood, Chick-Fil-A, City of Killeen offices, Shell Oil and Bell County 9-1-1 are among the companies to be represented.

Caterpillar, FedEx Ground, Waco city offices and Performance Aircraft are among those to be represented at Waco’s job fair.

Fort Hood’s event will be held at the Fort Hood Community Events Center on Clear Creek Rd. from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. while Waco’s event will be held from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the Waco Convention Center on Washington Ave.

The hiring fair in Round Rock will be held from 9 a.m. until 12 p.m. at the Armed Forces Reserve Center on N. Red Bud Ln.
