GATESVILLE (July 11, 2012)--A broken water pipe Tuesday night in an upper floor bathroom flooded the basement of the Coryell County Courthouse but no records were damaged.
Coryell County Clerk Barbara Simpson said two- to three-inches of water was standing in the basement archives room but the clerk's records escaped damage.
The basement archives is where the clerk stores old land and other records, she said.
"We dodged a bullet," she said.
The culprit was a water supply line that feeds one of the bathrooms on an upper floor of the three-story, 115-year-old building.
Simpson said the archives rooms are closed Wednesday while crews abate the water.
Abstract companies searching land records and researchers doing genealogical studies often use the records.
