CORYELL COUNTY (January 10, 2013)-- A man snared in June in a sting in Coryell County was sentenced to federal prison Wednesday after he earlier pleaded guilty to possessing cocaine with intent to distribute the drug.

U.S. District Judge Walter S. Smith, Jr., sentenced Melvin Stephone Grey to serve 30 months on count 1 and 5 years on count 2 on the charge of possession of crack cocaine with intent to distribute.

Smith also ordered Grey to serve the sentences consecutively, ordered him to serve 3 years on supervised release on each count concurrently, imposed a $1,000 fine and required Grey to pay $200 in special assessment to the court.

A document presented in Waco's federal court during Grey's plea hearing says on June 26, 2012 a deputy who had been assigned to a drug task force had arranged to make a drug buy from two men who were sitting in a pick up truck in a parking lot.

When the deputy approached the truck and spoke to the driver and his passenger through an open window, he was able to see several plastic bags that contained what the deputy believed to be cocaine.

The deputy returned to his car under the guise of getting his money and signaled to other officers to surround the truck.

The driver noticed the presence of law officers and ran from his truck, however he was caught s short time later.

Brandon Christopher Taylor, the passenger, also attempted to run but was taken into custody immediately.

During an inventory of the vehicle officers found a handgun on the passenger side floorboard, recovered baggies of what later would test to be cocaine, and located a small plastic bottle that contained an amount of cocaine base, also known as "crack" cocaine.

Taylor also has pleaded guilty to the same charge and is set for sentencing Feb. 13.
