Gatesville: Fate Of County-Owned Property Decided

GATESVILLE (November 27, 2012)--Vacant property along E. Main Street could soon be developed into county offices after an agreement was made between the county and Waco-based architectural company RBDR.

In April, the Coryell County Commissioners wanted to get rid of the county’s activities complex and Gatesville City Council wanted to find a use for some vacant property near the courthouse, so, they swapped.

The two governmental bodies have been discussing the land swap for years.

Commissioners said the deal benefits the county because the complex building is in need of repair and the county didn’t have the reserve funds to pay to repair the air conditioning system and fix other problems.

The city, on the other hand, had no real use for the former Foxworth-Galbraith Lumber Co. property but because it sits just about a block from the courthouse, the county could more easily put it to use.

The old lumber company building was torn down years ago and the property has been vacant, except for weekly use as a farmer’s market.

County commissioners plan to work together with RBDR to develop a master plan for more county offices and courtrooms.
