Harker Heights: Unsafe Homes To Be Demolished

HARKER HEIGHTS (December 19, 2012)—The City of Harker Heights will soon start the process of demolishing 19 vacant single-family homes on Lynn Drive, and the rest of the homes on the same street, which have been deemed unsafe, may also soon be razed.

"These buildings have serious safety issues for fire, carbon monoxide, things that are just dangerous that were determined not to be habitable," said Fred Morris III, the city's director of planning and development.

Harker Heights City Council awarded a contract for demolition this week after the city's Building Standards Commission deemed the properties on Lynn Drive unsafe, substandard and dangerous.

The homes to be demolished are duplexes and fourplexes built more than 60 years ago.

"Everyone in Harker Heights should expect to have a safe healthy place to live no matter what the income ranges are," Morris said.

These properties cost about $300 a month to rent.

The city began inspecting the vacant houses in March.
