BELL COUNTY (January 10, 2013)--Law enforcement officials in Bell County are doing their part to make sure convicted sex offenders register with the state.

By law, offenders convicted of sex crimes must register with the state and local police for a number of years as specified by the county.

Authorities must have proof of address, an up-to-date photo and place of employment if applicable.

According to DPS Trooper Harpin Myers, 13 offenders in Bell County were checked Tuesday.

Members of the Bell County Sheriff’s Department and the Department of Public Safety found only three sex offenders who failed to comply, all of whom list Killeen as their home of record.

Arrest warrants were then issued for those people.

Strides were made in November when the Nolanville Police Department joined the national sex offender program Offender Watch which enables Texas law enforcement agencies to collaborate and share information with law enforcement partners statewide to crack down on sex offenders.

The program implements an innovative electronic registration and inter-agency preregistration and alerting system designed especially for Texas processes, saving agencies several weeks spent waiting on paper forms, a program spokesperson said.

More sweeps are planned for the county in the coming months.

Residents can access a list of registered sex offenders in their area by visiting the public records website for Bell County.
