KILLEEN (January 27, 2013)—More than 42 non-profit organizations are up for grabs, or maybe you would rather sit on a city board or committee.

The City of Killeen held a two-hour volunteer orientation Saturday to introduce 22 potential volunteers to opportunities and projects throughout the city.

The class presented attendees with opportunities afforded through the vast agencies throughout the Killeen area.

There was also discussion about boards and committees for which the city requests volunteers.

"People volunteer for numerous reasons," said Wilfred Brewster, Director of Killeen Volunteer Services.

"One is to give back to their community. We find many times military retirees are looking to serve and this is a possibility."

Others might be looking to gain new skills so they might volunteer with an organization that can offer that education and increase their chances of getting a job.

"Winston Churchill once said that 'the greatest rent for living on God's Earth is service, and so as people volunteer, they are paying their rent in full,'" said Brewster.

Volunteer orientation is held every 90 days, but residents can also sign up to volunteer through the City of Killeen's website.

The next opportunity to volunteer will be March 2.

Help is needed to clean up the trash along Lowes Boulevard in front of Wal-Mart and along the waterway.

Residents are asked to meet at 8 a.m. on March 2 in the parking lot of the Killeen Community Center at 2201 East Veterans Memorial Boulevard.

Volunteers will be provided with gloves, vests and safety gear for the activity.
