KILLEEN (October 3, 2012)--A Killeen teacher will find out on Sunday if he is the winner of a statewide weight loss competition, sponsored by H-E-B.
Contestants are competing in the 2012 Slim Down Showdown for a chance to win $10,000 or a $5,000 fan favorite prize.
Donnis Hamilton, 37, of Killeen has been competing against 24 other contestants in the program that includes a five-and-a-half day wellness lesson along with weekly coaching.
The Slim Down Showdown is lasts 16 weeks.
Participants also must be willing to share their journey and blog about their experience, an H-E-B spokesperson said.
At 445 pounds, Hamilton told competition organizers before the program began that he has trouble keeping up with his 3-year-old son.
He said he has considered weight loss surgery but added that it doesn’t help when you don’t learn to break bad nutritional habits.
The program began in June and will wrap up Sunday in conjunction with the fall Siclovia, a free San Antonio event hosted by the city and the local YMCA.
Overall winners will be announced at the Grand Finale celebration in San Antonio.
“I am not in it for the money. I am in it because it offers something I have not gotten yet. I have not gotten training… Give a man a fish; you feed him for a day. Teach him how to fish; you feed him for a lifetime,” Hamilton said.
