KILLEEN (October 9, 2012)—American Red Cross volunteer David Allen Gilg III, 25, was arrested Tuesday in Killeen and charged with theft over $100,000, but under $200,000 in connection with a series of bogus claims that totaled $117,000, police said.

The investigation that led to the arrest started on Sept. 12 after the manager of the Killeen/Fort Hood area Red Cross reported the discovery of questionable entries made by a volunteer regarding a disaster response in August.

A review of the records revealed that the location and clients were fictitious.

The manger investigated further and discovered other bogus claims for more than $20,000, police said.

Police investigators ultimately uncovered 84 bogus claims made by the volunteer between January and September, each of which was for between $1,000 and $2,000, authorities said Tuesday.

The volunteer, who had worked with the Red Cross for more than seven years, kept the debit card issued for the amount of each claim and then withdrew the money for personal use, police said.

Gilg was arrested at around 3:30 p.m. Tuesday in the 900 block of Leifester Circle.

He was in the Killeen City jail Tuesday evening.

The Red Cross issued a statement Tuesday evening that said, “We are aware of the arrest of a former volunteer with the American Red Cross Central Texas Region. The information in this matter was initially developed by the Red Cross and was turned over to the appropriate law enforcement agency for review and possible investigation. The Red Cross will cooperate fully with any investigation and while it is in progress we cannot comment on any other aspect of the matter.”
