KILLEEN (June 24, 2012)—Westbound U.S. Highway 190 was closed Sunday morning in the area of W. S. Young Drive in Killeen as police surrounded an auto parts store after a robbery, thinking the armed man was still inside the building.
Officers responded to the report of the robbery at around 8:30 a.m. Sunday at O'Reilly Auto Parts, 1703 East Central Texas Expressway.
Two employees were in the process of opening the store at the time of the robbery, but both were able to escape from the building.
They told officers the man entered the store, displayed a handgun and demanded cash.
Police, thinking the robber was still inside, surrounded the building and closed down nearby streets including Highway 190 and the frontage roads from Stan Schlueter Loop to Trimmier, A.J. Hall Boulevard and Grandon Drive.
Once the scene was secured, a SWAT team searched the business, but came up empty-handed.
Police say the robber was able to escape from the store with an undisclosed amount of cash in the few minutes that passed between an employee’s 911 call and the arrival of the first officer.
The robber was black, stood about 6-foot-3 and weighed about 250 pounds.
Had covered his face and was wearing a light blue or gray hooded sweatshirt.
Investigators are asking anyone with information to contact Killeen Crime Stoppers.
