LORENA (October 23, 2012)--A Lorena police officer fired his weapon at a man who threatened him with a crowbar during what police are calling an attempted break-in at a Lorena grocery store.
Police were sent just before 1 a.m. Tuesday to the Brookshire Brothers grocery store, just off Interstate 35 in Lorena where a building alarm had been activated.
As officers arrived they reported the front door of the building was open and as the officer made his way into the store, two men ran from the building.
The officer ordered the men to stop and one of them came toward the officer armed with a crowbar.
The officer pulled his firearm and shot at the man, but didn't hit him.
In a news release sent at 9 a.m., the Lorena police chief said the armed suspect dropped the crowbar and ran around the building where he disappeared.
The other suspect ran in an opposite direction and also disappeared.
Additional police units from Woodway, Hewitt and Waco, along with deputies from the McLennan County Sheriff's Office were sent to the area to assist in the search for the two men.
Tracking dogs from prison units in Marlin and Gatesville also were sent to the area where the dogs were able to pick up a scent but the suspects weren't found.
A short time later, according to a Department of Public Safety dispatcher, Lorena police broadcast a description of the two men in an effort to have area police locate them.
Police were looking for two men, one or both of them possibly armed; one said to be 6-foot-1, wearing maroon pants; the other 6-foot-2, wearing black pants.
Police say both men were wearing black hoods and had on gloves, either white or grey, and both men were wearing black-and-white shoes.
A store employee who asked not to be identified told News 10 the burglars got into the front of the building and broke into an office but were unsuccessful in breaking into the store's safe.
They did, however, manage to break into an ATM machine inside the building and take an undisclosed amount of cash.
