LORENA (April 30, 2013)--A demonstration on I-35 of a new warning system to alert drivers when they are entering nighttime lane closures with slow or stopped vehicles ahead will take place Thursday.
The demonstration zone will be located on the new I-35 northbound frontage road north of the Moonlight Dr./ FM 1695 intersection north of Lorena at exit 325.
The event will begin at 10 a.m. and TxDOT officials will explain the new state-of-the-art system.
According to TxDOT, the purpose of the system is to increase safety in work zones by giving motorists additional advance notice of driving hazards ahead.
Messages will be displayed on portable signs set up a few miles ahead of the closure to allow motorists time to prepare for changing conditions.
TxDOT will deploy the system at closure locations determined to have high potential for traffic back-ups based on analysis done by the Texas A&M Transportation Institute.
TxDOT states they aim to lessen the likelihood of collisions in work-zones through the new warning system.
Last year nearly 17,000 work-zone crashes resulted in 134 fatalities.
