Remains Of 4 Recovered From Unmarked Graves Revealed By I-35 Work

TROY (October 1, 2012)—Work has resumed along Interstate 35 in Troy after the remains of a child and three adults were recovered from unmarked graves discovered at the end of August by a contractor doing construction on the southbound frontage road of the highway near Roberts Cemetery.

Work in that area was suspended while a team of Texas Department of Transportation archaeologists excavated the graves and removed the remains.

TxDOT was working with the Roberts Cemetery Board of Trustees to review cemetery records to see if they hold a clue to the identity of those whose graves were uncovered.

The four were evidently buried sometime in the late 1800s or early 1900s, the Texas Department of Transportation said Monday.

The remains will be stored temporarily in TxDOT’s Cultural Resources Consultant firm's archaeological laboratory, in Austin for additional forensic study and then will be re-interred, the state said.

“In the interim we will continue with identification efforts, and any descendants identified would be free to petition the court for permission to remove them for burial elsewhere,” TxDOT said in a press release Monday.

TxDOT said five people have expressed an interest in the possible identification of previously lost ancestors.
