The accident happened around 6:15 Monday evening while traffic was still backed up after the crash involving four 18-wheelers and nine passenger cars.
The man was a passenger in a car that was caught in the traffic backup and authorities said he got out to try to determine the reason for the backup when a southbound vehicle clipped him.
He was taken to Scott & White Hospital in Temple.
