MARLIN (May 2, 2013)--Legend Football Field on Hwy 7 East will host relay for life beginning Friday evening.
The event will kick off with a ceremony at 6 p.m. with a special appearance by Miss Texas and Miss Central Texas. The event will end on Saturday morning at 6 a.m.
In the past, the county has raised between $25,000-$40,000 Relay For Life Volunteer Roberts said.
“We’re hoping to raise more than that this year, “ Roberts said.
So far, 50 cancer survivors have pre-registered and between 150-200 people are expected to participate.
“We have family teams doing it for loved ones battling cancer and others doing it in memory of someone they’ve lost due to cancer,” Roberts said.
Various activities will take place as part of the event including a survivor lap, a caregiver lap, activities for kids, a pancake eating contest, and more.
A luminary ceremony and memory lap will also take place.
“The luminary ceremony is very beautiful to see,” Roberts said. “They are bought for $5 a piece in memory of someone battling cancer or someone who has passed away."
“It’s a very moving program, the luminaries spell hope and sometime during the program they change to spell cure,” Roberts added. “It’s really cool to see.”
Those wanting to participate in the event can still come out and register free of charge. However, teams participating in the event must be pre-registered.
A closing ceremony will take place at 5 a.m. on Saturday to end the 12-hour event.
