Marlin: Police Dept. Holds Benefit For Injured Chief

MARLIN (January 3, 2013)—The Marlin Police Department is holding a benefit basketball tournament this month for police Chief Darrell Allen, who was seriously injured in a one-vehicle accident in November and has been unable to work since.

The One City One Team Basketball Tournament begins at noon on Jan. 12 in the Marlin High School gym.

Teams had until Friday to sign-up and pay the $25 entry fee.

Admission is free, concessions will be available, and tickets will be sold for raffles of items between games.

Allen spent about a week in the intensive care unit of Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center in Waco after he was injured on Nov. 16 in the early morning rollover accident near Marlin.

In late November, Allen was set to begin rehabilitation in the Austin area.

Allen suffered a broken femur and other injuries in the accident, which happened at around 2 a.m. Nov. 16 on State Highway 6 north of Marlin as Allen was driving home from an off-duty security job in Waco.

A Department of Public Safety trooper who investigated the accident said Allen lost control of his 2004 Ford Explorer near Falls County Road 121, it left the roadway and overturned several times.

Allen, who was not wearing a seat belt, was thrown from the vehicle, the DPS report said.
