MARLIN (November 9, 2012)—Faced with what city officials described Friday as “an unprecedented loss of capability to provide water service,” Marlin officials implemented the most severe restrictions outlined by the city’s drought contingency plan.

A problem that started Tuesday evening when a man delivering liquid chemicals to the water treatment plant turned a wrong switch, causing the treatment plant to stop pumping water for 16 hours, has escalated despite pleas for voluntary conservation.

Under the restrictions implemented Friday, virtually all outside water use is banned including landscape irrigation, washing down sidewalks, driveways and buildings, and filling outside pools, operating fountains.

The restrictions also limit residential and commercial water use.

For example, for a single family home in which 3 to 4 people live, the limit is 7,000 gallons a month or about 230 gallons a day.

Commercial customers are limited to 75 percent of a monthly water usage baseline.

Violations are punishable by fines of as much as $500 and repeat violators could be disconnected from the city’s water system.

Officials originally estimated that the problem would be repaired by Thursday, but then said Thursday repairs would take several more days.
