Understaffing Puts Texas Prison Guards At Risk, Union Says

AUSTIN (November 23, 2012)--A union for correctional officers in Texas says understaffing is putting guards at risk during the deadliest year inside state prisons in more than two decades.

The union wants better pay for the nearly 5,000 correctional officers working for the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.

It says low wages are driving guards away despite the agency offering bonuses to new recruits.
