Temple: Local Airport Displays WWII Aircraft Beginning Wednesday

TEMPLE (March 25, 2013)--The Draughon-Miller Central Texas Regional Airport will display several aircraft from WWII as part of the "Wings of Freedom Tour" beginning Wednesday.

Aircrafts featured in the show include the Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress "Nine O Nine" WWII Heavy Bomber, Consolidated B-24 Liberator "Witchcraft" WWII Heavy Bomber, and P-51 Mustang fighter.

The aircrafts will fly into the regional airport and be on display Wednesday from 2 p.m.-5 p.m., Thursday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Friday from 9 a.m.until noon.

WWII Veterans can tour the planes free of charge and are invited to share their stories during the display.

Regular admission to tour the planes will be $12 for adults and $6 for children.

Area residents may also schedule a 30-minute flight before or after display times on one of these rare aircraft.

Flights on the B-17 or B-24 are available for $425 per person and P-51 flights are $2, 200.

Flights aboard a Huey helicopter can also be scheduled for $80-$100.

The "Wings of Freedom Tour," travels the U.S as a tribute to the crews that flew, maintained and built the aircraft, and WWII veterans and their families.

The tour is part a part of The Collings Foundation, a non-profit educational foundation that focuses on "living history" events to teach more about history through participation.
