TEMPLE (December 5, 2012)--For the past seven years, Army veterans Don and Barbara Damron of Hamilton have served as Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus, spreading holiday cheer to patients at the Temple VA Hospital.

"You see guys older than you are, and you see guys younger in their 20s and 30s that have served," Don said.

"We get an opportunity to talk and work with all of these vets no matter what they are."

Instead of coming all the way from the North Pole, this Christmas couple comes from Hamilton.

"We're cut from the same cloth as all these other veterans that served our country," Barbara said.

Don said he was asked to be Santa because of his looks.

"Without the suit on walking through the mall, kids still recognize the persona, and they do everything in their way to get mom to turn around and look," Don said.

Don is 60 and Barbara is 70, and although this year their age has slowed them down a bit, they're still thankful they have the opportunity to serve their community.

"It turned out to be a Christmas gift to ourselves when we go," Don said.

"If everyone gave just a little back that they've gained, this would be a great world."
